About Days of Service, Scholarship and Engagement

The Days of Service and Engagement and Scholarship and Engagement are curricular anchors in the Academic Affairs division of the College that represent the College's commitment to high impact practices. The aim for the Day of Service and Engagement is to teach students the practice of social responsibility as they partner with community agencies to engage in service learning. The Day of Scholarship and Engagement aims at continuing that learning to celebrate classroom achievements around research and its impact.

A Message from Rev. Ms. Blythe Taylor, Assistant Provost for Integrative Learning

"I have often described certain days of Barton's academic calendar as 'high holy' moments because they number among the days when the family that is Barton has the opportunity to gather in unison around a shared experience. That gathering is sacred. We leave our day to day tasks behind briefly and work together toward a common goal--either through service or through the celebration of scholarship. That commitment to the celebration of service and scholarship enables us to showcase the outstanding work of our students and faculty that deserves to be highlighted. These days represent my favorites among the high holy experiences of this community. They call us to unity. They call us to wholeness. They call us to see beyond ourselves. Our world needs more of that perspective and I cherish the opportunity to be a part of this College's commitment to those values."

Why are donations necessary?

The Day of Service and Engagement serves to enhance community relationships, enable Barton College to visibly return support for the community that nurtures it, teaches students the value of giving back to one's community, teaches students values around emotional intelligence such as social responsibility, gives students the opportunity to practice professionalism while building relationships with fellow students, faculty, and staff. The Day of Scholarship and Engagement invites students to apply their classroom experiences and lessons to learn the value of research and its impact on our culture. It empowers them in their intellectual pursuits, offers an opportunity for students to celebrate each others' advances in the academic arena and creates community engagement around academic achievements. It serves to offer a glimpse to first year students or students new to Barton of what they can achieve as they advance through the College curriculum. Taken together, these days represent the best of our efforts at integrating learning and life.
